GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- An Elmsford man was arrested and charged with attempted murder and other charges a day after officers responded to a report of shots fired on Payne Street in Greenburgh, according to police.

Officers found a number of shell casings on the sidewalk on Payne Street, between Winthrop Avenue and Sears Avenue, according to a release from the police. A crime scene was established and detectives responded to conduct their investigation. There were no reported injuries, nor weapons recovered at that time.

On Wednesday, detectives and uniformed police officers conducted a day time search in the vicinity of Payne Street and Sears Avenue, according to the release.

While conducting their search, a man was observed in the yard at 166 Sears Ave. Detectives interviewed the man who is known to police from prior arrests.

As a result of their investigation, detectives recovered three loaded firearms -- a sawed off shotgun, and two semi-automatic handguns -- found under a children’s swing set in the yard, according to the release.

The man was placed under arrest and was found to be in possession of another loaded handgun and a quantity of crack cocaine, the release said.

He was identified as Tajuan Herring, 37, a resident of 172 Saw Mill River Road, Elmsford. The residence at 166 Sears Ave. is owned by a relative.

Herring was charged with one count of second-degree attempted murder, four counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, two counts of third degree criminal possession of a weapon and one count of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

The defendant is due to be arraigned in Town of Greenburgh Court Thursday afternoon.
