Harrison Clerk Brings Services on the Road

HARRISON, N.Y. - Harrison's town clerk office took a leap into the 20th century when Joseph Acocella was elected, according to resident Roxanne Doherty. Acocella took his work on the road this month by setting up at various locations in town to help citizens on the go.

"Joe’s a great clerk for working people," Doherty said. "He's done so much to make us more modern."

Acocella said the idea for his "mobile office hours" started when he was elected in 2007. He heard that residents wanted to see a clerk with a greater convenience and to provide more access to the people of Harrison, he volunteered his time to pack piles of paper into clear containers and bring his work to the people.

"Nobody works nine to five anymore," Acocella said. "The people of Harrison needed more options and I wanted to bring the office to them."

The clerk's services were at Harrison's disposal this week when Acocella set up his table Wednesday downtown and Thursday in West Harrison during the town's summer concert series .

Acocella said the typical mobile office hours session might service between two and five people, but each one was worth it.

"If it helps one person, I'm satisfied," Acocella said. "That's one more person's life that I made easier."

His only disappointment was that he couldn't offer all of the clerk's services while on the road, Acocella said. The most essential service that Acocella said isn't currently offered remotely is a marriage license, but he was working to make that mobile in the future.

However, it isn't all about the services, Acocella said. While he waits at the clerk's makeshift service table, Acocella talks to residents and jots down their suggestions to make his office more efficient.

"It's amazing what a five-minute conversation can do," Acocella said.
