Harrison Dance Studio to Visit London Olympics

HARRISON, N.Y. - While everyone else cringed as the thermometer levels rose during Thursday's heat wave, New York Dance 's Francesca DeAngelo couldn't have thought of anything greater.

A paper thermometer taped to the display window of her Harrison dance studio had a long way to go before reaching the $75,000 goal to bring her team to the 2012 London Olympics in collaboration with the non-profit American Alliance of Performing Arts Educators .

One week after the studio's year-ending recital, Harrison native DeAngelo and 64 others continued working to raise money to fund their overseas trip. The group will perform in the festivities that surround the events at the famous Warwick Castle and other London locations.

"We had a great year and this is like the icing on the cake," said DeAngelo, a White Plains resident. "I don't even think the kids realize the enormity of it all."

Singing, dancing and acting come together into the New York Dance experience and have created local performances like "Grease," "Fiddler on the Roof" and "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown." Their most recent production, "Hooray for Hollywood," was held at the Veterans Memorial Building earlier this month.

"I like to say we're like the little engine that could," DeAngelo said about the studio's theatrical ambitions. "We've been everywhere."

Students at the studio have gone as far as performing at the world-famous Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in Manhattan.

New York Dance hosts fewer than 100 students and will celebrate its 10-year anniversary this upcoming season.

The group will hold various events throughout the year to raise money including a Sept. 17 dinner at Mamaroneck's St. Thomas Episcopal Church to remain an integral part of the community. It will also perform "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" Aug. 6 at the town's Veterans Memorial Building at 2 p.m.
