Harrison Funeral Home Sued by Federal Government

HARRISON, N.Y. — Harrison Funeral Home is being sued by the federal government.

According to published reports, the lawsuit claims that owner John Balsamo did not reveal funeral costs to the grieving families in question. Tim Parlatore, lawyer for the funeral home, told The New York Post that his client “maintains a price list and has always been very careful that he is in accordance with the rules.”

“We intend to fight this and have him exonerated,” Parlatore told The New York Post .

The feds are seeking the maximum penalty of $16,000, alleging that five violations of the law known as the “Funeral Rule” occurred in March and July of 2010. The law was put forth by the Federal Trade Commission to make sure bereaved families are treated fairly and are not overcharged to bury their loved ones.

Published reports say the funeral home was accused of violating the “Funeral Rule” in 2001, adding that Balsamo was given the option to enroll in a voluntary program to avoid future violations. The lawsuit alleges Balsamo failed to enroll in the program and continued to violate the rules.
