Harrison HS Thanks Seniors for Achievements

Zachary Butler is days away from graduating from Harrison High School and said he couldn't be more excited on the night of his school's awards ceremony. His mother Theresa stood beside him with nothing but excitement for him.

"I'll be sad to see him go," Theresa Butler said. "But I'm excited for him. I know he'll benefit from going away to college."

Zachary Butler said he was attending Rochester Institute of Technology in the fall to major in game design and technology.

"I'm nervous, but excited at the same time to go off to college," he said. "It finally feels like I'm taking those final steps in high school."

Butler was just one of the 87 Harrison students honored for their academic and personal achievements at the school's 31st annual Senior Scholastic Awards Ceremony for the class of 2011. Students, parents, and faculty members filled the Harrison Performing Arts Center to applaud the honorees.

"This is one of my favorite nights," Superintendent Louis N. Wool said. "These students are the next generation of leadership for this country."

Wool addressed the audience with a brief speech on leadership and responsibility.

Though most awards were given and named by the school, there were others that students had achieved on their own through external applications. All students invited to the ceremony were given assorted scholarships and academic awards presented by Principal James A. Ruck as they were recognized.

"We're very proud of all of you," Ruck said. "You've all shown during your time here that you are good people."
