HARRISON, N.Y. – Thankful Harrison residents both young and old from around Harrison and other communities filled the open Harrison Public Library Thursday  for some warmth, electricity, and Internet access after Hurricane Sandy knocked out power to many Monday evening.

People plugged their phones and computers into the many available outlets throughout the library.

Rich Wilkins, one of the many joyful patrons, lives in White Plains and lost power Monday evening at 7:15. However, he was grateful that  it was only electricity that he lost.

"In comparison to what other people are going through, it's an inconvenience, but certainly not a hardship," said Wilkins. "I've come here in the past and the Westchester Library System is actually excellent as far as  having free WiFi Internet access and a place to plug in."

With gas supply being low and many stations without any at all, Wilkins said it is difficult for him to get to work in New Jersey, where there are also still many closed roads.

"As long as I have the Internet and electricity, I can do most of my work right here," he said.

Library director Galina Chernykh said this shows the library's importance to Harrison.

"This is incredible proof that the library is the center of the community and a physical building can serve as a community shelter in a time of crisis," said Chernykh.

The library is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It will be open Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
