HARRISON, N.Y. - The downtown Harrison Library opened its doors to a new art exhibit on Monday when The Harrison Council for the Arts presented "Marilyn Cohen Retrospective: Closing the Circle - 1956-2006." The work will remain on display until Aug. 4.
Artist and deceased Harrison native Marilyn Cohen's work will be featured in an opening reception for the exhibit on July 18 at 7 p.m. inside the library. She died in 2006 and left behind a large body of work.
Husband Lewis Cohen will host the event. The work includes watercolor-dyed torn paper collages.
"Since 1990 I have been gathering oral histories and old photos in an ongoing endeavor to save the personal stories that make up our American history," Marilyn Cohen said. "These visual and oral memories are the inspiration for my work."
Cohen's creative background included designing greeting cards, wallpaper and fabric patterns, illustrating children's books, and designing and supervising the production of a successful line of adult board games.
Her latest work, "Face to Face: An American Patchwork," was a group of 56 collaged canvases of heads and was part of a retrospective that toured the country over several years.
"Cohen's technique always functions, in part, as a metaphor of her subject's significance - truly the medium is part of the message," Director of the B'nai B'rith Klutznick National Jewish Museum Ori Z. Soltes said. "At first glance, [her works] appear to be delicately and effectively rendered watercolor paintings. It is only upon closer study that one realizes they are comprised of scores of fragments of torn pieces of paper which have been drenched in color."
Cohen was born and raised in New York City and attended the School of Visual Arts. She met her husband Lewis while at college and they moved together to Westchester to raise their three children.
The exhibit will be on display Monay and Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
