Harrison Library Puts Up Barriers For Safety

HARRISON, N.Y. – The Harrison Public Library will be installing barriers to protect the building and its patrons and staff after three incidents last year.

“Three cars drove into our building, so at this point we’re taking precautions,” said Library Director Galina Chernykh. “This is what we’re doing to make sure the building is safe.”

The barriers will be placed between the building and parking spaces to prevent drivers from mistakenly going forward into the library with the car in drive rather than reverse, which Chernykh said is likely what happened.

While there was no financial or physical damage during those incidents, Chernykh said the Town and Library boards were concerned about them. The library and parking lot are owned by the town.

“Sometimes we need to put up with a little bit inconvenience and a little bit of noise, but it will improve the parking lot and library,” she said. “I know it’s not aesthetically pleasing, but in terms of safety, it’s something that we have to do.”

The Harrison Engineering Department told Chernykh that the work should not take more than a week.

“We made sure that the library was still open and services are not disrupted,” said Chernykh. “It’s a little bit noisy, but we keep part of the parking lot open and the front door is not blocked.”

Chernykh added that the programs have seen the “same amount of people who usually come.”
