Harrison Library Says Its Movie Program Is A Hit

HARRISON, N.Y. – For a town that has no movie theater, Harrison has a nice selection of first-run movies. They're being shown at the Public Library as part of its in-house film program.

“It is really great for the community,” said Harrison Public Library director Galina Chernykh. “We try to find the most popular and new movies. If somebody missed it in the movie theater or couldn’t make it, they always can come to the library.”

The town has no movie theater of its own – the nearest one is in Mamaroneck, and it isn't free.

The library showed “Cars” on July 11 and “New Year’s Eve” on July 18. “The Hunger Games” and “Leap Year” are coming on Aug. 29. On Wednesday, they showed “The Lorax.”

Chernykh said the movie program for adults, which just began this year, is very popular.  Children’s librarian Bonnie Tjomstol added that the children’s program is picking up in popularity.

“[The adults] come, they bring their lunch and they chat. It’s a social thing, so they love that,” Tjomstol said.

With the children “it was more educational,” Chernykh said, but now the library is providing “new and entertaining movies” instead. Many of the kids read books related to the movie after the event, Tjomstol said.

Friends of Harrison Public Library provides cookies and juice for the free event. Chernykh and Tjomstol say the best thing about the program is that it draws more people to the library.

It is an expansion of the many programs the library offers, Chernykh said.

As a reader of all three books in "The Hunger Games" series, Chernykh is looking forward to watching the movie on Aug. 29.
