Harrison Library to Talk Renovation Plans Sunday

HARRISON, N.Y. - Residents of Harrison are invited Sunday afternoon to have a say in renovation plans for the Richard E. Halperin Memorial Library Building. The Harrison Public Library Foundation will be hosting a free reception to mark the beginning of its fundraising efforts from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

"Our current facilities are outdated and we want to change that," Diane Sammons, president of the Board of Trustees said. “The downtown library is located in a 1961 building, which needs to be updated. In addition to providing state-of-the-art library services, we envision a social, civic and cultural center for the town of Harrison."

Stephen Hicks, HPLF President, will provide an update on the foundation’s efforts to finance the project at the reception. Representatives from H3 Hardy, the architectural firm retained by the library trustees, will also present their proposed renovation.

The firm's library planning and design practice experts Daria Pizzetta and Margaret Sullivan have been working with the library trustees, staff, patrons, and residents for months to tailor the new design to the Harrison community's needs and wishes.

"Community support is vital to bringing the Harrison Public Library into the 21st century, and we are thrilled that the Harrison Public Library Foundation has joined us in this effort,” Sammons said. She and other library trustees will be at the reception to talk about their vision for the future of the Harrison Public Library.

Funds for the planned renovation are being raised by the Harrison Public Library Foundation, which was established in November 2010 with a commitment to enhance the Library as a valuable community resource by improving its facilities, programs and capabilities.

H3 Hardy is nationally recognized for planning and designing community spaces and has recently worked on library projects including the Botanical Research Institute of Texas Library in Fort Worth, the library at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music in New York City, the Vassar College Library in Poughkeepsie, and the library at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point
