“Keep the heat on,” said Danny Formisano, who owns Harrison Plumbing and Heating Service. “Don’t lower it too much.” Formisano said it helps to “bleed the radiators,” because you will “get better heat” as a result. Insulating the pipes also is very important, he added. The 33-year veteran has seen a lot through the years due to his work in sometimes frigid temperatures, including a customer’s house freezing while they were on vacation. Formisano is usually helping people through tough situations, which led him to say it’s a “terrible way to do work, but it’s work.” While the temperature has dropped, calls to his office have increased over the past few days as he helps customers with various plumbing issues.

The plumber also said if you have a fireplace, use it. Another company with tips to deal with the frigid weather is Roto-Rooter Plumbing and Drain Service, which is located throughout the United States. The company states on its website to install the pipes in heated spaces and “lower in the ground, below the frost line.” Roto-Rooter also recommends letting a faucet drip “to prevent a pipe from bursting.” “If you currently notice slower water flow and expect frozen pipes, you should call a plumber immediately,” the website states. “Oftentimes issues like this can be resolved before any damage occurs.”

As for the bitterly cold weather, that is not expected to  let up in Harrison until Monday, when the forecast high is 32 degrees and the low is 30, according to Weather.com.

There is a high of 26 degrees and a low of 17 degrees expected Friday, with snow forecast to hit at night. Saturday, it will be mostly sunny with a high of 27 and a low of 14. Sunday will see a high of 29 and a low of 18, with sunny skies.
