Harrison Rec Coordinator Brings New Activities

HARRISON, N.Y. – Some new activities have been ushered in along with the recently hired Harrison recreation head Gerry Salvo, and will be introduced this month, the department said.

January programming features many of the same popular activities offered in the past including Italian language classes and a basketball clinic. But new programs like a free youth hockey clinic/league and adult Zumba highlight the schedule.

Salvo was named superintendent of the recreation department last September and said he wanted to work closely with the community to deliver dynamic activities for everyone to enjoy.

"I want everyone to be together and keep it one community," Salvo said. "I'm going to strive to continue bringing people together."

The new youth hockey clinic/league focuses on instructional sessions focusing on the fundamentals and principles of the sport, the department said. Sessions, which started Dec. 14, are held Wednesdays from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Sollazzo Center in Harrison. Newcomers are welcome.

Adult Zumba classes will begin later this month with sessions at the Leo Mintzer Center in West Harrison starting Jan. 24 and at the Sollazzo Center in downtown Harrison Jan. 25. Residents seeking more information can contact instructor Lindsey Chiaramida at (914) 400-7477.

Other activities offered in the month of January include boys and girls lacrosse, mini day camp, Nerf hockey, baseball and softball. Additional details and the full schedule can be found on the town website or by contacting the office directly at (914) 670-3179.
