HARRISON, N.Y. - Gary Tenore might own Gary's Salon on Halstead Avenue in downtown Harrison, but the extent of his work reaches far beyond the confines of Westchester County. The Mamaroneck resident and Pelham native said his experience in the styling world makes for a unique background unlike many other salon managers.
By week, Tenore can be found tending to over 30 loyal clients in his Harrison salon. But come the weekend, he is on a plane traveling to different countries to teach others how to work with major products for It&ly hair fashion . Tenore said he's been to as many as six different countries in a given year.
"It's refreshing to always be going somewhere different," Tenore said. "I can't sit still. I never have a chance to get bored with anything. I'm still waiting to see what I want to be when I grow up."
Aside from being a Harrison hairdresser, Tenore works for Milan's It&ly hair fashion as a director of education. He described the role as a more performance and teaching-based position, unlike his hands-on craft works at his Harrison salon.
"If you play the piano, you need to practice before you perform," Tenore said. "I do the same thing. I work with my clients here and then go out on the road to teach."
Tenore said his background was unlike many others at his level. With past experience in theater and dance, he said his familiarity with performing in front of crowds makes his job as an educational director and on-stage personality come naturally. He travels the world for It&ly hair fashion to teach of new products as well as teach and style for high-profile shows events including the Pre-Emmy Gifting Lounge, Saturday Night Live and Music Television.
"I didn't do what most hair dressers have done," Tenore said.
Gary's Salon has become Tenore's local It&ly hair dressing sanctuary with over 30 returning clients from throughout the county coming for his work that he calls "New York City quality."
"I have the best clients," Tenore said. "We're all one big family."
