Harrison Students Share Back-to-School Excitement

HARRISON, N.Y. - Alphonse and Matthew Lustrino woke up Tuesday with a positive perspective on going back to school.

"They were excited to go back to see their friends," Vicky Lustrino said of her sons, both students at S.J. Preston Elementary School. "They're just not looking forward to the homework. I think they will survive."

Alphonse, a fifth grader, and his brother Matthew, in third grade, were two of the hundreds of Harrison students who returned to school Tuesday morning for the 2011-2012 school year.

The buses hit the streets and summer vacation came to a close as the hallways of Harrison's schools filled with kids.

"It was exciting for me," Vicky Lustrino said. "I just hate that they grow so fast."

Their excitement was shared with many Harrison High School seniors and it showed in the school's student parking lot. Student cars throughout the lot were decorated Tuesday with windows reading "Seniors 2012," expressing anticipation for the upcoming year.

"I had mixed emotions," parent Jennifer Ricci said about sending her fifth-grade daughter Elizabeth back to Parson's Memorial School. "I am happy to see her go back to school and be with her friends, but sad to see her go because it was fun spending extra time with her this summer."

Elizabeth Ricci said she was nervous about returning to school and was concerned about not knowing where her classroom was or who she would be in class with.

Kindergarten students had an early dismissal Tuesday at 11:15 a.m. that will continue through Sept. 23. They begin their first full day of school on Sept. 26.
