Harrison Students Step Up in Laps for Lupus

Harrison High School students Jessica Magnotta and Ally Brabant came together to support a friend and the Lupus Foundation of America by launching Laps for Lupus, an annual fundraiser at the school.

The idea arose when their friend and teammate on the Harrison softball team, Alijah Webb, saw her mother fall ill to the disease and continue to battle it.

"We did this out of support for Alijah and her family," Brabant said.

Taking place at the high school's track, participants could donate to the cause by purchasing $10 T-shirts, waters, ice pops, or pledging money for each lap they take around the track. Webb's mother, Susan Scibetta, said she was proud of the girls for their work.

"They're amazing," she said. "I'm proud of them for doing something so educational."

Scibetta walked in the event with four of her six children, and said she has been doing well.

"I was really sick last year for about six months," she said. "But when I'm well, I'm really well."

Laps for Lupus is a new fundraiser, but Magnotta, a senior at the school, said the girls intend to make it an annual staple to Harrison High School.

"I'll be back," she said. "We're not going to stop."
