HARRISON, N.Y. Two Harrison organizations took a step forward to building a new playground on the grounds of All Saints Episcopal Church.
The Harrison Childrens Center (HCC) and Webster Avenue Nursery School (WANS) held their first annual Sale-A-Bration, which raised money toward a new playground. HCC Director Debbie Imperia said the project would cost about $100,000.
Weve been talking about holding a sale for about five years now, so we just decided a month ago to jump in and do it, Imperia said. We sent out flyers to people to donate some of their stuff from their spring cleaning so we can help raise some money.
Eileen Mauro, director of WANS, said it would be easier if the two groups raised the money jointly, since they share space in the same building. Several vendors were brought in, but most of the items sold were donated, Mauro said.
This is a real team effort, Mauro said. We got lucky with the weather, too. This first year is a learning experience so far.
Imperia said the idea for the new annual event was to start small and gradually grow in the coming years. This years event, though slow, had a fairly steady stream of customers, she said.
We are hoping to have it more kid-friendly next year, Imperia said. We want to accommodate as many families as possible. We pride ourselves on that.
