Harrison Teens Buying Books for Local Library

WEST HARRISON, N.Y. – The West Harrison Public Library will debut a new program this weekend that allows five teenagers to buy books from Barnes & Noble for the library.

“Through this activity, the library wants the teens to attain decision-making skills, apply their knowledge of books and what other patrons want to see on the library's shelves,” said Galina Chernykh, director of Harrison Library, in a written statement.

The teenagers, 13-17 years of age, “will be accompanied by parents and popular West Harrison librarian Liz Karkoff,” said the statement.

“The book selection decisions will be left up to the teens, a group made up of an array of avid readers of various subjects,” said the statement.

Chernykh said the kids “are going to represent the library and think like librarians.” She is hopeful that the library will fill gaps in its collections and therefore, “its patrons will have access to a large bundle of reading materials.”

"We are the center of the community for education, intellect and entertainment," said Chernykh. "We serve the public, so (we) want to satisfy their desires, requests and reading interests."

The five teenagers will shop for the books at the White Plains Barnes & Noble at 1 p.m. Saturday.
