Chirico, 19, who used her fearless moves and physical prowess to snag a spot in the Madrid Open, advanced into her first WTA semifinal Thursday by beating 39th-ranked Daria Gavrilova, The New York Times story said.

When she was younger, Chirico impressed her coaches by both her tenacity and her lack of fear about missing the ball, The New York Times report said.

Chirico herself said she was encouraged to use her "big engine" to get out there and test her limits, The New York Times reported.
