HARRISON, N.Y. -- The Harrison Youth Council announced Tuesday the appointment of Lisa Calder-Vella as its new coordinator of the Youth Employment Service program.
Calder-Vella, a certified school counselor, will head the YES program to help Harrison's youth find paying jobs and internships. The program also provides job preparation skills such as interview prep and resume writing.
President of the Harrison Youth Council Scott Altabet said Calder-Vella has hit the ground running, having already met with students in the Harrison High School library. Her hours at the library have typically been held Mondays from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Calder-Vella also meets with students after school inside her office, located at the HYC office at 84 Calvert St. on Thursday afternoons.
With an extensive background in education and youth services, Calder-Vella's new role comes naturally. She's worked with the New York City Board of Education, which led to her employment with Manhattan's Smith School, worked as assistant director of the substance abuse Dynamite Youth Center and held individual, group and family counseling sessions.
Harrison's YES program is actively looking for job and internship opportunities for local students. Those interested in employment options can contact the program at (914) 835-5700 or by email at TheJobLady@Optonline.net.
