Harrison's Red Bulls Youth Soccer Coach Jones Killed

NEW YORK, N.Y. - West Harrison youth soccer coach Michael Jones, 25, died early Sunday morning after being stabbed during a fight in Union Square in Manhattan.

Jones was rushed to Bellevue Hospital with several stabs wound to his chest, head and neck and pronounced dead shortly after arrival, according to a report from the New York Police Department.

A 911 call came from someone at approximately 4:30 a.m. Sunday from an address near 14th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues, police said. Jones was seen lying on the sidewalk. Police released a surveillance video they said shows a suspect in the slaying.

Jones was apparently arguing with a man with a pony tail just before he was attacked, according the police report.

The Red Bulls posted an Associated Press report on the killing and released a statement on its website Sunday saying, “We are aware of this tragedy and on behalf of the entire organization, want to send our most heartfelt condolences to Michael’s family, friends and loved ones.

“He was a tremendous individual, a fantastic coach who loved soccer and a terrific friend for many of us. This is truly a sad day for our soccer community and we will do our utmost to help authorities in their investigation of this case.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Michael’s family at this time.”

Jones, a native of Liverpool, England, worked for the professional soccer Red Bulls training youngster ages 7 to 14.
