“One of my top priorities was to update the town’s website,” said Town Clerk Jackie Greer. “With today’s need for instant information, it was imperative that we upgraded the site to provide our residents with information as quickly as possible.”

She said the old site was "a hodgepodge of information" that visitors could get lost in.

The host system for the new site is 400 miles from Harrison in a secure building, and it has three backups.

"In case of a natural disaster such as Hurricane Sandy, our site will still be up and running," she said.

The new site also has mobile capability, meaning it can be accessed on an iPad, Kindle or smartphone in case of a blackout.

Each town department has its own homepage that  features a "FAQ" section as well. The "forms" page has been updated and now includes a feedback form "to ask department heads a question, make a complaint, or give a compliment."

The old site was averaging 5,000 hits a week, but the number jumped to 2,000 a day at the height of Hurricane Sandy, Greer said.

The refurbished website launched on Thursday.
