Hydrant Flushing Continues in Town of Harrison

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- If you see water running in the streets beginning Wednesday, it's because fire hydrants in the Village and Town of Mamaroneck are being flushed, according to the Westchester Joint Water Works (WJWW) website .

The "flushing" will take place over the next few weeks between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. This practice is "an important preventative maintenance activity that helps insure the integrity of the water system and to provide the highest quality water to our customers," according to a notice from the WJWW sent out Monday afternoon.

The WJWW listed the following benefits to "flushing":

  • Flushes sediments from water main pipes, thus enhancing water quality
  • Verifies that fire hydrants and valves are working properly and that ample water flow is available for firefighting needs
  • Aids in determining weaknesses in water pipes and related fittings and valves

If you see WJWW crews flushing fire hydrants in your immediate area, the notice stated you may temporarily experience cloudy water. The discoloration "is harmless and generally consists of precipitates that do not affect the safety of the drinking water."

If your water is discolored, the WJWW advises you to run the cold water for a few minutes, but to not use hot water or do laundry because it could cause sediment to accumulate in your hot water system and/or cause clothing to become discolored.

If you experience discolored water conditions that last for more than a day, please contact WJWW at 914-698-3500 .

Hydrant flushing began in West Harrison March 26 and is now moving to Purchase, the Town of Harrison, the Town and Village of Mamaroneck, the Greenhaven section of Rye and Springdale Road area of New Rochelle.

For a full list of streets in the Village and Town of Mamaroneck crews will be working on, visit the WJWW website .
