Kids Celebrate Summer Reading At Harrison Library

HARRISON, N.Y. – Kids of all ages and their parents were treated to music and a short play at the Harrison Library during the Dream Big Read! Summer Reading Game closing party Thursday.

“It was a big success,” said children’s librarian Bonnie Tjomstol of the monthlong program. “We had it here and also in West Harrison . We had a lot of new children this year, and it was really fun.”

For every 15 minutes that a child read, or was read to, they earned a star. The stars were traded in for prizes ranging from bubbles and beach balls to stickers and a slice of pizza from Pizza 2000.

Participants ranged from “very, very pre-school up till 12. But this year we had a lot of the young ones, and they loved having the teens read to them,” Tjomstol said. “They loved the attention, and the teens loved doing it. It was wonderful.”

Robert Markowitz played guitar for the kids and assisted them with a short play. Then they all played drums to celebrate.

He said the program makes reading fun. “The kids are seeing their friends read, and they read, so there’s kind of a peer thing going on,” said Markowitz, who grew up in Mamaroneck and now lives in South Salem. “I think they’re building a feeling of unity over reading. I don’t remember having programs like this when I was a kid.”

Tjomstol said keeping the kids reading during the summer was the best part of the game.

“A lot of these kids read a lot,” she said of the nearly 100 kids who participated. “They loved the prizes.” At the end of the event, kids were able to take several books for free, which Tjomstol said was great - because it will keep them reading.
