WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Low-income residents affected by Hurricane Sandy can apply for Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, commonly known as food stamps, beginning Friday, Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino announced Wednesday.
If your household was damaged or you lost possessions or income from the storm, you are eligible to apply for the disaster benefits, which can be made available when an emergency or disaster causes the number of applications to significantly increase in a short time.
In addition to disaster-related expenses, eligibility is based on household income, resources and other circumstances. Food loss alone won’t qualify you for assistance. Current SNAP recipients are not eligible for D-SNAP, which is supervised by the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance and administered by local departments of social services.
“People need to know that help is available,” Astorino said.
Applications will be accepted at:
- The Westchester County Department of Social Services Yonkers District Office, 131 Warburton Ave., Yonkers – 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Nov. 16 - 21.
- DSS Mount Vernon District Office, 100 E. First St., Mount Vernon – 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Nov. 16 and Nov. 19 - 21.
- DSS White Plains District Office, 85 Court St., White Plains – 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Nov. 16 - 21 and Nov. 23.
- DSS Peekskill District Office, 750 Washington St., Peekskill – 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Nov. 16, Nov. 19 - 21 and Jan. 12.
- White Plains Disaster Recovery Center, County Center, 198 Central Ave., White Plains – 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. Nov. 16 - 21 and Nov. 23.
No applications will be taken at any of the designated sites on Thanksgiving, Nov. 22.
