Manhattanville to Host Pulitzer Prize Winners

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Manhattanville College will host two Pulitzer Prize winners on March 9 to discuss their new book “Someplace Like America: Tales from the New Great Depression.”

Journalist Dale Maharidge and photographer Michael Williamson won a Pulitzer for documenting life in the United States amongst the working poor. According to Mark Nowak, director of creative writing at Manhattanville College, they will be speaking about their experiences across the country where they met people firsthand that are struggling.

“Since this is an election year we hear a lot of discussion about workers in America but it is more through statistics like home foreclosures and unemployment,” Nowak said. “We really don’t hear from the people who are affected firsthand. That’s what they are here to speak about and show us.”

Maharidge and Williamson first started working together while on staff at the California-based newspaper the Sacramento Bee , according to Nowak. Previously, the duo had collaborated on other projects similar to their most recent book. When musician Bruce Springsteen discovered their work in the 1990s, he wrote two songs about it on his 1995 album “The Ghost of Tom Joad,” Nowak said.

“They will also speak about some of their previous work as well,” Nowak said. “Many of the working poor underclass in America haven’t had their stories change for several decades. They will discuss the struggle 30 years ago and what those people’s children’s lives are like now.”

The event begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 9 at the Berman Student Center.
