Manhattanville to Host Sports Social Media Panel

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Sports industry professionals will be at Manhattanville College on Thursday, April 5, to discuss how social media have changed the landscape of sports.

Included in the panel discussion are Tom Beusse, president of the USA Today Sports Media Group, and Erin Sharoni of CNBC and the NBC Sports Network. Dave Torromeo, director of the sports business management program at Manhattanville, said social media have become a “hot topic” in the sports industry.

“Questions that will be posed to the panel include challenges with brand names and the way athletes can use social media outlets like Twitter,” Torromeo said. “Social media in sports is kind of like the Wild West right now, as people are trying to figure out how to change on the fly. We are seeing new companies dealing with social media coming almost every day.”

Torromeo, who founded the sports business management program at the college in July 2006, said the sports industry has changed drastically over the past six years due to social media. He said a lot of teams and leagues have implemented policies in that time pertaining to who can use social media websites and when.

“This panel discussion will help us expand our scope across the industry,” Torromeo said. “We’re starting to see the sports industry now hire professionals full-time to deal with only social media.”

The panel discussion starts at 9 a.m. For more information call (914) 323-5301.
