Work began July 28 to install a new 34-inch by 53-inch elliptical concrete pipe and 42-inch diameter drainage pipe, along with other improvements to increase capacity in the storm drainage system. It will continue for two more weeks at least, according to a worker on site Wednesday.
A city official said a water main is in the way of the work, and will be temporarily dislodged to complete the installation of the new drainage system. He said this will not cause disruptions in water service.
The two center lanes on Maple Avenue between Hale Avenue and Bloomingdale Road are blocked between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. when work is being done.
Drivers going down Maple Avenue will also notice construction taking place on a building across from the Westchester Pavilion. The 66-unit residential building was slated for completion in the spring, but has been pushed back to the latter part of 2014.
The building is just one block away from the drainage system work, but is unrelated. A worker on site Wednesday said the new development has already connected to existing service lines that run across Maple to Dekalb avenues.
David Mann of Lighthouse Enterprises in White Plains is the developer of the new building. He also built 30 units for rent on Lake Street, which was completed this past Spring. The apartments rented within one month, according to a city official.
