Mayor Walsh: Irene Downs Over 30 Trees, 28 Streets

HARRISON, N.Y. - Mayor and Supervisor Joan Walsh released a statement Monday outlining the effects of Tropical Storm Irene as the town continues to undo its destruction.

In total 30 downed trees hit electrical wires and 28 streets are closed from the storm and its aftermath.

"While we didn't have the crisis that municipalities further south endured, there was more than enough going on here in Harrison," Walsh said. "For some, it was almost a non-event, as they didn't suffer any damage and were only inconvenienced by the wind and rain. For others, it was a major event as their basements flooded with water or sewage, streets were closed, and wires came down."

Walsh said that far more than 30 trees fell during the storm, but that number indicated how many toppled electrical wires throughout Harrison.

"I don't have a count of every tree that is down, but there are many," Walsh said. "These are a priority for Con Edison, as the town crews cannot work on the trees until the wires are deactivated."

Consolidated Edison reported 836 Harrison customers without power as of Tuesday at noon.

The statement also said 28 streets were closed after the storm had passed. Walsh said the water subsided quickly but not until it had done "major damage in many areas."

Harrison Emergency Medical Services reported 18 calls during the storm with eight being Advanced Life Support emergencies, Walsh said.

"As always, response time was excellent, but now was coordinated with Department of Public Works and fire as well as police," Walsh said. "We can only be grateful that Irene weakened before it reached Harrison."

The storm canceled flights throughout the Northeast and also closed major highways and roads on the ground.
