HARRISON, N.Y. Sabrina Mastrangelo, Miss Long Island teen, won the Miss Teen New York 2012 contest Sunday afternoon at the Performing Arts Center at SUNY Purchase.
Mastrangelo bested a field of 41 contestants from New York State in a contest that featured swimsuit and evening gown competitions before the five finalists answered questions.
All 41 contestants were on stage at the beginning of the competition before 20 finalists were selected. After all 20 girls participated in the swimsuit competition, 10 finalists were selected. They then competed in the evening gown event before they were narrowed down to five contestants. The competitors answered two questions each before the champion was announced.
Also on hand was Lisa Drouillard, Miss Teen New York 2011, who spoke about the excitement of winning the crown.
Samantha Gold, Miss Armonk, made the top 20 but didn't advance further. In remarks before the contest she said, "I think I did amazing in the preliminary round Saturday and I'm very excited for today."Kandice Pelletier, Miss New York 2005 who competed in the Miss American pageant, coached Gold and some of the other contestants. She said she coached them on interviewing skills, walking and how to bring out the best in the girls.
She said Gold is "a great girl, beautiful and did an amazing job. I hope she'll continue to compete in the Miss division.
