Monitor Rejects Harrison's Affordable Housing Defense

HARRISON, N.Y. -- Zoning in Harrison restricts minorities a federal housing monitor wrote to town officials in a letter earlier this month, according to LoHud.com.

Harrison Mayor Ron Belmont has defended the town's affordability, which has been questioned by a federal housing monitor.

Attorney James E. Johnson said in a letter dated Jan. 7 that " less affluent residents and racial and ethnic minorities live in geographically separate enclaves,'' according to the story.

Westchester County agreed in a 2009 lawsuit to build 750 affordable housing units in 31 communities where the black population was less than 2 percent and the Hispanic population was less than 7 percent. Johnson is overseeing the implementation the deal.

Harrison Mayor Ron Belmont defended the town's affordability in a September letter, which prompted the response from Johnson.
