Mural Founder to Visit Manhattanville in Harrison

HARRISON, N.Y. – Artist and activist Claudia Lefko will speak at Manhattanville College's Berger Gallery at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 5 as the school features her "How Will They Know Us" mural project on Iraqi-Americans from the Iraqi Children's Art Exchange (ICAE).

The exhibit will include some acrylic-on-canvas murals painted over three years by Iraqi and American children from ages 8 to 18 years old. The project was born through a union of ICAE and Art Miles Murals, an international project in support of the UNESCO Decade of Peace and Non-violence Among Children of the World: 2000-2010.

In the mural, participants were asked to define themselves and their communities and to establish personal and collective identity. A total of 12 murals and 17 smaller works were created from working with groups of Iraqis in Baghdad, Amman, Jordan, and Troy, N.Y.

The exhibit will open Oct. 4 through Nov. 4 in the Berger Gallery located in the Berman Students Center. The gallery hours can be found on the school's website.

ICAE was founded in 2001 by Lefko in Northampton, Mass. and invites Iraqi and American children to become involved.
