HARRISON, N.Y. Artist and activist Claudia Lefko will speak at Manhattanville College's Berger Gallery at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 5 as the school features her "How Will They Know Us" mural project on Iraqi-Americans from the Iraqi Children's Art Exchange (ICAE).
The exhibit will include some acrylic-on-canvas murals painted over three years by Iraqi and American children from ages 8 to 18 years old. The project was born through a union of ICAE and Art Miles Murals, an international project in support of the UNESCO Decade of Peace and Non-violence Among Children of the World: 2000-2010.
In the mural, participants were asked to define themselves and their communities and to establish personal and collective identity. A total of 12 murals and 17 smaller works were created from working with groups of Iraqis in Baghdad, Amman, Jordan, and Troy, N.Y.
The exhibit will open Oct. 4 through Nov. 4 in the Berger Gallery located in the Berman Students Center. The gallery hours can be found on the school's website .
ICAE was founded in 2001 by Lefko in Northampton, Mass. and invites Iraqi and American children to become involved.
