Patrick Bosley, a New York state police senior investigator, said Baumler lived in the house and Robson was a neighbor.

“It was a result of the hurricane, high winds brought an extremely large tree down directly in the middle of the house,” Bosley said. “It’s extremely tragic. Both left siblings behind. It will take a lot of time to for this little neighborhood to recover.”

The boys’ siblings were hurt in the accident, but not badly. Baumler’s brother, age 13, and Robson’s sister, age 15, were both treated for minor scrapes and abrasions on the scene by the responding emergency medical services.

The accident happened Monday night at about 7:20, when Hurricane Sandy’s wind was picking up dramatically in Westchester. New York State police in Somers responded to a 911 call at the Bonnieview Street home at 7:20 p.m. and found a large tree had fallen on the residence, according to a police report. Bosley said the tree devastated the house. It did not appear inhabitable yesterday.

North Salem Supervisor Warren Lucas, who is on vacation in Turkey, said in an emailed message Tuesday, “Our hearts go out to the families of our two boys who were killed yesterday in the wake of hurricane Sandy."

He continued, "Our thoughts and prayers are with them, their families and our volunteers," he continued. "You realize how precious life is when a tragedy like this happens.

“Please keep safe and be careful,” Lucas wrote. “There are many broken tree limbs still stuck in trees."
