NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – North Salem’s officials have won their long drawn-out battle with the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) concerning the lowering of certain speed limits in town.

Town officials have maintained that the 30 mph speed limit set by the DOT is unsafe on certain roads in town. For example, drivers crossing the state line from Connecticut, where the speed limit is 25 mph, often accelerate when they reach North Salem, where they are apt to encounter hikers and horses on unpaved surfaces.

As a result of the town’s ongoing campaign, the DOT has agreed to lower the speed limit to 25 mph on certain roads in town. These include Hunt Lane, Wallace Road, Baxter Road, Vails Lane, Norton Lane and the unpaved section of Nash Road. Paved roads include Post Road, Bogtown Road and Wheeler Road.

“The DOT did the right thing,” said Assemblyman David Buchwald. “This ruling is a victory for all town drivers and residents.” Buchwald introduced the legislation (A.6242) in conjunction with legislation previously presented by Senator Greg Ball.

“We thank Assemblyman Buchwald for his part in this successful outcome for North Salem residents,” said Supervisor Warren Lucas. “His legislation, in addition to other important factors, led to the lowering of speed limits in crucial locations, and we’re all safer for it today.”
