For permanent residential generators, the city Building Department requires you to apply for a mechanical, electrical and plumbing permit, which is required only if the generator uses natural or propane gas. You must use an electrician licensed in Westchester County for the electrical and plumbing permit. Additionally, your home's gas service must be checked to confirm if the extra load of the generator can be accommodated. The noise from the generator cannot exceed 65 decibels.
If you buy a portable residential generator, you will need an electrical and plumbing permit. If you make any permanent connections, you must use an electrician licensed in Westchester County. One must also be used to obtain a plumbing permit.
Portable residential generators must be a minimum of 10 feet away from operable windows because it is a source of carbon monoxide. Like permanent generators, noise from portable generators cannot exceed 65 decibels at the property line.
The city also reminds residents to be respectful when using a generator and shut it off when not needed, or at night.
