Purchase College Shows African American Soul

HARRISON, N.Y. - Renowned pianist Pete Malinverni is bringing a unique flavor of music to Harrison's Purchase College Performing Arts Center next week when "Soul Voices" takes the stage.

The musical legacy of African-American culture will be put on display in a combination of musical forms where 60 voices join to perform spiritual, gospel R&B, funk and soul.

"The beauty of that music is the universality of the message as it relates to the human experience," Malinverni said. The choir's music is typically derived from, or influenced by, the wealth of African-American culture, he said.

The Purchase College Choir, also known as "Soul Voices," performs under the direction of virtuoso and founder Malinverni, who works at the school as a jazz studies faculty member. The choir is drawn from across the college with an emphasis on its diverse membership united in song and exploring the music of African-American tradition.

A main goal of the choir, Malinverni said, is to reintroduce jazz and gospel music.

"It's like two long-lost siblings, separated at birth," Malinverni said. "They teach us much about what is possible when we express our shared humanity through music."

The performance is scheduled for Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. in the Purchase College Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $20 and $15 for seniors. Those looking for more information can call (914) 251-6200 or order tickets online at ArtsCenter.org .

Malinverni has performed at leading clubs, festivals and concert halls worldwide including Carnegie Recital Hall. His 12 albums as a leader have consistently received high accolades and heavy airplay.

He served for 18 years as Music Director of the Devoe Street Baptist Church Gospel Choir in Brooklyn. He now lives in in Pound Ridge and is the pianist/conductor at the Westchester Reform Synagogue in Scarsdale, NY.
