Purchase Men, Women Sweep Home Openers

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Purchase men’s and women’s basketball teams opened their respective home openers against Yeshiva and Merchant Marine Academy Tuesday.

The Panthers’ men (2-1, 1-0 in Skyline Conference) were led by junior John Pressley (New York, N.Y), who made several spectacular plays en route to a game-high 18 points. Pressley added six rebounds, three assists and no turnovers in 32 minutes.   Purchase led 34-21 at the half and head coach Jeff Charney substituted freely in the second half as the Panthers outscored Yeshiva 35-29 in the final 20 minutes.

The Panthers are coming off back-to-back conference crowns and two consecutive NCAA DIII Tournament appearances, but only return one player, B.J. Warrington (Bronx, N.Y.), from last year's championship team.

Freshman Antonio Johnson (Fort Johnson, N.Y.) hit on three 3-pointers and scored 10 points in his home debut and junior Amar Reynolds (Bronx, N.Y.), another key transfer, scored 13 points off the bench. Newcomers Justin Person (Greenburgh) (six points), Chris Fazio (Mohegan Lake) (six points), D.J Smith (Saugus, Ca.) (four points) and Will Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) (two points, one steal) also made contributions in the victory.The Panthers next play Thursday against Mt. St. Mary in its final home game before the Christmas break.

Panthers Women Top USMMA 51-45

The Purchase women navigated in and around some early trouble before finding a quick flurry of points in the second half that helped the Panthers edge visiting USMMA.The Panthers (3-2) were led by Rachel Perrone with 18 points and 12 rebounds and Jessica Perrone finished with six points and four rebounds

The Panthers will now travel to Mount Saint Mary Thursday night for their conference opener against the Knights in Newburgh.
