Purchase Starts Artist Lecture Series In Sept.

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Purchase College, SUNY will host Ronnie Bass, a New York-based visual artist and musician, as part of its Visiting Artist Lecture Series Sept. 12.

The Master of Fine Arts Board of Study chose Bass along with two other artists for the school year. He will be meeting with MFA students “one-on-one in their studios and talking about their work,” which will then be followed by a public lecture.

“The School of Art and Design at Purchase College Visiting Artist Lecture Series brings to campus noted artists, curators, critics and historians who share their perspectives and expertise on their own work and provide insight into current issues facing the contemporary artist and designer,” Purchase said in a prepared statement.

Bass, who was chosen by the Master of Fine Arts Board of Study, has had his work displayed in American and international museums. He is excited to once again take part in the Purchase series.

“I often go to artists' talks because I'm interested in hearing about the processes and ideas that helped form the art work,” he said. “However, what I like most about these talks is that the audience can respond and ask questions. There aren't many situations that invite this type of artist and audience interactivity. As the lecturer, I often learn a lot about my own work from the questions that are asked.”

He has worked “within the media of video, sculpture, installation, and sound,” the school said in the statement. The 36-year-old currently is producing a hip-hop album for release in 2013.

The free event will take place from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Visual Arts Building's room 1016.
