Purchase Sweeps Three-Team Swim Meet

PURCHASE, N.Y.  – The Purchase College men’s and women’s swim teams dominated a three-team dual meet Friday, out-swimming teams from Bard College and Sarah Lawrence in a meet that ended the first half of the winter season.

The Panther women bested Bard 77-17 and also defeated Sarah Lawrence 66-28, while the men topped Bard 79-15 and Sarah Lawrence 72-21.

“It was a great performance from the team,” coach Peter Nestel said. “Needless to say, I'm very pleased and excited about the second half.”

Purchase opened with a win the 200-yard medley relay, taking both in women's and men's races and kept rolling from there. Patricia Fazzino captured a second-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle, while teammate Joshua Nielson grabbed a first-place finish.Purchase's Christina Muller led the field in the 200 freestyle, an event that August Cook won on the men's side. Kamara Lewis continued her impressive early-season success, adding a victory in the 50 freestyle. Jeffrey Sutters joined Lewis placing first in the same event.

Alexandra Bodick and Nielson grabbed first-place wins in the 200 IM, and Lewis added her second of the night in the 100 butterfly. Mike Zeffiro took first place in the 100 butterfly, edging his teammate Seth Feingersh.

Muller added a victory in the 100 freestyle and Samir Mekrami also won the 100 freestyle as the Panthers continued their stretch of first-place finishes on both the men's and women's side. Mekrami would later collect another first-place in the 500 freestyle. Bianca Covello and Cook were tops in the 100 breaststroke. The Panthers will train in Puerto Rico during the holiday break and return to competition in 2012 hosting Brooklyn on Jan. 21.
