The Department of Public Works will make the bags available Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Yonkers Organic Waste Yard, 610 Nepperhan Avenue.
“Flood mitigation efforts are being planned by DPW crews for certain low lying areas, but we also want to ensure our residents take the necessary precautionary steps in protecting their homes and property,” Mayor Mike Spano said.
According to the mayor’s office, DPW crews will also be on call Friday and Saturday ready to deploy pumps in low lying creeks and to clean catch basins in order to mitigate area flooding.
The city’s response follows a flash flood watch for southern Westchester County which was issued Thursday afternoon by the National Weather Service. The watch is expected to last until 2 p.m. Saturday, according to the NWS.
Forecasters warn the remnants of Tropical Storm Andrea combined with a low pressure system could bring between two and four inches of rainfall to the area.
Residents with questions or concerns about flood mitigation should contact the Mayor’s Help Line at (914) 377-HELP (4357).
