Sierra Club Lower Hudson Group Backs Ryan

The following announcement was submitted and written in its entirety by Gerri Goerke and Jo Anne Gorski of the Sierra Club Lower Hudson Group.

The Sierra Club Lower Hudson Group is pleased to endorse William J. Ryan for re-election to Westchester County Legislator, District 5, White Plains, Scarsdale and Silver Lake in Harrison.

Bill Ryan has been a strong advocate for the environment in his district, writing and getting passed key legislation particularly in the area of watershed protection. Bill Ryan obtained county funding, and attracted state and federal aid as well, to build sewers in the Quarry Heights section of North Castle to prevent residential waste and other toxins from entering the Kensico Resevoir, the drinking water supply for Westchester County and New York City. Bill also improved the operation of county sewer systems and treatment plants to prevent pollutants from entering the Long Island Sound and Hudson River. Bill joins many other county and State legislators in his opposition to the dangerous practice of hydro-fracking for gas in the Marcellus Shale which permanently destroys aquifers and surrounding ecosystems.

Bill Ryan has supported the work of the Climate Change Advisory Council and the county partnership with local businesses and school districts for the adoption of renewable energy practices and green building construction. He is committed to eliminating 20 percent of the county's greenhouse gasses by 2015 by "thinking globally and acting locally."

Please join the leaders of the Sierra Club Lower Hudson Group by voting Nov. 8 to re-elect Bill Ryan to the Westchester County Board of Legislators, District 5.
