Dean Skelos Nephew, Former Area Athlete, Charged With Assaulting Reporter

A nephew of Dean Skelos was arrested moments after the former State Senate majority leader's sentencing to five years in prison Thursday for corruption charges Thursday.

While surrounded by cameramen and reporters, a video by News Channel 13/WNYT in Albany appears to show Billy Skelos grab the wrist of a New York Daily News reporter and throw her cell phone across the street outside the courthouse in Manhattan where Dean Skelos and his son Adam were sentenced. Adam Skelos received a sentence of six-and-a-half-years in prison.

Billy Skelos, a 27-year-old former lacrosse player at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut, was charged with misdemeanor assault following the incident.

The reporter involved received a tetanus shot as a precautiona scratches suffered in the incident, the New York Daily News reports.

Skelos, a Republican, and his son Adam were convicted of conspiring to use Dean Skelos’ position for jobs, fees and benefits. Dean Skelos was also found guilty in December of illegally approving a contract for a Scarsdale firm for which his son had been employed.
