Sun Is Out But Beaches Are Closed Along The Sound In Westchester County

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- It's a beautiful almost-summer day in Westchester County, but swimming was prohibited Saturday at several Westchester beaches along Long Island Sound.

Beaches within Mamaroneck Harbor are closed due to the heavy rainfall.

The closure is a pre-emptive measure against possible sewage backup due to the heavy rainfall from Tropical Storm Andrea from Friday and into Saturday.

No swimming is allowed Saturday at the following locations:

  • Mamaroneck: Harbor Island Park, Beach Point Club, Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club, Shore Acres and Orienta Club
  • New Rochelle: Hudson Park, Echo Bay Club, Davenport Club, Greentree Club and Surf Club
  • Rye: Coveleigh Club

The weekend may not be a complete loss at the beaches, though. Westchester County Health Department will make a decision about swimming on Sunday based on how much additional rain fell and weather conditions. Officials suggest calling ahead before heading to the beach.

The Westchester County Health Department closes beaches for one day whenever at least half an inch of rain falls within 24 hours, the county website says.  If it rains more than an inch, beaches remain closed for two days.  The county will determine when to reopen in the event of rainfall of more than two inches.
