PORT CHESTER, N.Y. – A truck got stuck under the Metro-North overpass on N. Main Street in Port Chester on Thursday, requiring a tow truck to remove it and closing traffic oth ways for more than one hour.
The overpass is near the intersection of Horton Avenue. As Vincent Towing pulled the 18-wheeler, CRST Premier Transport truck out from under the Metro-North overpass, minor debris could be seen falling during the pull. The back of the truck, which Lt. Jeffrery Hartrey said was likely a private postal tractor trailer, had significant damage.
"It gets caught in the bridge and the way these trucks are built they collapse in the center," Hartrey said.
Metro-North official inspected the track and the condition of the bridge after the truck was removed. However, the incident did not halt an trains Thursday, as several passed overhead as the truck was being removed.
Hartrey said more trucks used to get stuck underneath overpasses at that intersection before the village installed flashing traffic signals for north and south-bound traffic. He said this was done three years ago.
"Truckers seem to catch that quicker," he said. "A lot of them aren’t familiar with the area, a lot of them go by their GPS, and GPS doesn’t give bridge height."
