Water Company Has No Power, Asks Customers To Conserve

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Westchester Joint Water Works (WJWW) is asking customers to conserve water while it’s operating on emergency back-up generators as a result of Hurricane Sandy.

WJWW provides water to about 120,000 people in the villages of Mamaroneck and Larchmont, the town of Mamaroneck, Harrison and portions of the cities of New Rochelle and Rye. It is relying 100 percent on its emergency back-up generators as it waits for Con Edison to make repairs to downed power lines at its water pump stations, treatment plants and computerized monitoring system.

WJWW is asking residents to:

  • Limit water use to only the most essential needs
  • Shorten shower times and limit toilet flushing
  • Check for leaks and repair leaks as quickly as possible
  • Do not use water from outdoor hoses to clean up storm debris or wash cars
  • Avoid the use of candles in homes or apartments, thus minimizing the risk of fire emergency
  • Homes with power should limit laundry and washer use to only full loads
