Westchester County, Many Towns Mark 15th Anniversary Of 9-11

As the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attack on New York City nears, a number of communities plan ceremonies to remember area residents killed on Sept. 11, 2001.

In addition to Westchester County's ceremony at Kensico Dam in Valhalla at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11, these other local memorials are planned:

-- The Town of Cortlandt and villages of Buchanan and Croton-on-Hudson will hold a 2 p:m. ceremony on Sept. 11 at Croton Landing. Dedicated during the ceremony will be an expanded memorial called "Reaching Through The Shadows," which includes a functioning sundial and steel beam from the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

-- At 9:45 a.m. on Sept. 11, the Town of Greenburgh will join the Hartsdale, Fairview and Greenville Fire Departments in a ceremony at Richard Presser Park (previously known as Webb Field) on Central Avenue. 

-- On Saturday, Sept. 10, a ceremony was held at Winding Ridge Memorial Garden in White Plains by the family of Sharon Balkcom, 43, who was killed on Sept. 11, 2001, while working for Marsh & McLennan Cos. Inc. at the World Trade Center.

-- Mount Kisco's annual ceremony is at 2 p.m. on Sept. 11 at the 9/11 memorial at 100 Main St.

-- The Croton Falls Fire Department is participating in a 2:30 p.m. ceremony on Sept. 11 at the North Salem Fire House at 301 Titicus Road.

-- At 7 p.m. on Sept. 11, there is a candlelight vigil planned on the steps of New Rochelle City Hall, 515 North Ave.

-- The Town of Mamaroneck, along with the Village of Mamaroneck and the Village of Larchmont, are planning a 5 pm. ceremony on Sept. 11. The ceremony will be held at "Girl Scout Rock" in Memorial Park on Myrtle Boulevard. Participants include local firefighters and police, the Mamaroneck Ambulance District, local Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops, as well as public officials. 

- The Village of Port Chester will be hosting a remembrance ceremony at Lyon Park on Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. 

-- Six American flags will fly from City Hall in White Plains as homage to residents who gave their lives. A remembrance service is set for 9 a.m. on Sept. 11 at Liberty Park on Lake Street, a permanent memorial site. The ceremony will include a flag raising, wreath laying, prayer and reflections.

-- On Friday, Sept. 9. Stepinac High School honored all alumni police, firefighters and EMTs at the 15th Annual Joe Riverso Memorial Game at the athletic field, 950 Mamaroneck Ave. in White Plains.

The ceremony honors the memory of Joseph R. Riverso, beloved Stepinac alumnus, athlete, assistant football coach and native of White Plains who perished in the 9/11 terror attacks. Riverso, 34, was working at Cantor Fitzgerald's offices in the World Trade Center during the attack.
