The overhead sign at Exit 9S where I-287 meets the Hutchinson River Parkway fell onto Westchester Avenue around noon Tuesday when the bolts at the base came off. The incident caused traffic delays, but nobody was hurt, officials said.
"There's been an ongoing discussion about whose responsibility the sign is. We're currently working with the county to get this resolved," said Beau Duffy, a spokesperson for the Department of Transportation.
The sign was installed by the state but is on a county road. Duffy said that traditionally maintenance for signs like this would become the responsibility of the county or municipality where the sign is located.
"Apparently this disagreement has been going on for a number of years, but it takes an event like this to bring it to the forefront," said Donna Greene, a spokesperson for Westchester County. She said that officials are currently in discussion about who is ultimately responsible for inspecting and maintaining the signs. In the meantime, crews from the state and county will be working together to inspect 15 similar overhead signs to make sure that a similar situation does not occur.
The sign was moved off of the roadway by Westchester County crews Tuesday afternoon. It had still not been repaired as of Wednesday afternoon, but Duffy said that the county and state would be working together to install a temporary electronic sign.
