James McNair, 23, of Yonkers was arrested Tuesday following a lengthy investigation by detectives that began following the first shooting and attempted murder of a 29-year-old Yonkers man, on Sunday, Jan. 14 around 1:42 p.m. on Warburton Avenue, said Yonkers Police Spokesman Dean Politopoulos.
During the first shooting attempt, police said McNair aimed a loaded firearm at the victim and attempted to kill him by firing the weapon three times directly at him at close range. The victim managed to escape without injury, Politopoulos said.
On Saturday, Jan. 20 2018, around 12:36 a.m., members of the Yonkers Police Department responded to 296 Woodworth Ave. on a report of a shooting incident. A follow-up investigation found that McNair aimed a loaded firearm at the same victim and attempted to kill him by firing the weapon one time directly at him at close range. The victim was struck one time and received serious injuries to his back and leg, Politopoulos said.
An intensive investigation utilizing multiple Yonkers Police resources established McNair as the shooter and the shootings were the result of a dispute between the two, he added.
“This defendant is accused of trying to shoot and kill a resident of Yonkers, not once but twice," said Police Commissioner Charles Gardner stated. "His violent and criminal behavior posed a deadly threat to both the victim and innocent bystanders. Due to the tenacious work of our Police Officers and Detectives, he will now confront the full force of the law for his heinous acts; let this be a warning to others who dare to engage in violent conduct in our City.”
McNair was charged with two counts of felony attempted murder and is being held without bail at the Westchester County Jail.
The prosecution is being managed by the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office.
