Attorney General Barbara Underwood announced on Monday that Seymour, Connecticut resident Collins Anyanwu-Mueller has been sentenced to one year in jail, and must pay $367,954 in restitution after pleading guilty to stealing from Medicaid over a five-year span by making false claims regarding care to patients he never provided.
Anyanwu-Mueller pleaded guilty to submitting false claims for private duty nursing services that he never provided to a pair of disabled patients in his care. Both Medicaid recipients required around the clock care at their homes located in New Rochelle and Pleasantville. He pleaded guilty to a felony charge of third-degree grand larceny in Westchester County Court in November last year. He has already paid $25,000 of the court-ordered restitution.
The Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit discovered that from August 2010 to January 2015, Anyanwu-Mueller submitted false medical claims between, Schneiderman said. The claims came during several instances, including times when Anyanwu-Mueller was on vacation in Europe, caring for different patients than he claimed and he also made claims to Medicaid for patients who were at the hospital and under the care of a different nurse.
“The Medicaid home care program is meant to provide vital care to severely disabled New Yorkers,” Underwood said in a statement. “Fraudsters who rip off Medicaid will be caught and prosecuted.”
