Work on West Street Bridge Begins in Harrison

HARRISON, N.Y. – Construction work involving repaving has begun on the West Street Bridge over I-95 in Harrison, eliminating one lane of traffic in the process on the two-way road.

Town Engineer Mike Amodeo said the project, which is being done through the state, will take approximately two and a half months to complete. Temporary traffic lights have been installed on each side of the bridge. During the day when construction crews are working, a person with a stop sign will direct traffic.

“Motorists should consider alternate routes to avoid delays during peak traffic hours,” Amodeo said. “When there is a new traffic plan there is a bit of a learning curve for vehicles to get used to. Once the daily commuters hit that area the first couple of times they’ll get used to it. So far we have had no complaints.”

The bridge connects downtown Harrison to the “trails,” which might increase the number of people affected. Many Harrison High School students who live downtown use the road to get to school in the morning. Commuters from Mamaroneck who come from Grove Street also use the bridge to get to the Hutchinson River Parkway on ramp about a mile up the road. Assistant Town Engineer Frank Balbi said that there is some concern that traffic will back up onto Grove Street when the road is busy.

“There is no lane now where people are used to stopping,” Balbi said. “They are working on one side of the bridge at a time so one side will always be stopped when cars are coming both ways.”

Balbi had previously met with the Harrison Police Department and the contractor who recently performed work on the bridge.

“They are handling the situation the best they can,” Balbi said.
