YORKTOWN, N.Y. Yorktowns Highway Department garage is still in line to be re-located, and Supervisor Michael Grace is now hoping it will be constructed with state-of-the-art green technology.
Grace said the town has put in for a relatively small grant that would to help begin the second phase of the environmental assessment form. Town officials recently met with a green-building developer in Armonk to look at possible technology for the building.
We got some great, incredible ideas, Grace said. The purpose was to look at new ideas for a state-of-the-art green highway garage, which would actually be a garage that would be self-sufficient in terms of energy.
The Highway Departments garage is now at the corner of Front Street and Underhill Avenue where it has been for nearly 60 years. The envisioned plan would be to move the highway operations with other Department of Public Works functions under one roof in a new building on Greenwood Street.
Its something that was presented back in the spring as an idea and a concept, and I just wanted to let everybody know that were still following through on that, Grace said.
Energy-saving ideas Grace proposed for the building includes heating it with sledge compost piles and using solar tubes to capture sun and moonlight to light the building. He said the building would also include a cleaning garage to extend the life of the towns vehicles.
Its actually really cool technology, he said.
Grace believes the current Highway Department area has a lot of potential and is hoping to re-claim the property and possibly turn it over to a private developer for another use.
